INSERRA SUPERMARKETS APPOINTS NEW PRESIDENT & COO
New York, NY (March 16, 2015) – Inserra Supermarkets, a leading grocery organization with over 20 large-format stores and one of the 500 largest private companies in the U.S., has tapped new leadership with the appointment of Ron Onorato as President & COO. Established in 1954 by Patsy Inserra, the company owns and operates 22 ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey and New York. As the strategic advisor to Inserra, Epsen Fuller Group conducted the search, which sought a first-rate leader with a track record of operational excellence and deep sector expertise in the retail, grocery and supermarket sectors.
Mr. Onorato will report directly to Chairman and CEO Lawrence Inserra, Jr. and will work closely with top management at ShopRite & Wakefern Food Corp., the largest supermarket cooperative in the United States with more than 320 ShopRite, PriceRite and Fresh Grocer supermarkets located throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Virginia. Progressive Grocer named ShopRite its 2011 Retailer of the Year and Supermarket News awarded ShopRite its 2011 Retail Excellence Award.
Formerly, Mr. Onorato was SVP of Operational Initiatives at Ahold USA, as well as President of the New York Division of Stop & Shop, spanning a 40-year career with the company. Mr. Onorato worked cross-functionally throughout the organization to achieve significant operational efficiency and cost savings, driving revenues and increasing profits. Mr. Onorato was the recipient of the Modern Grocer’s annual Publisher’s Award for Lifetime Achievement and was named the Connecticut Food Association’s Person of the Year. His educational background includes the University of Connecticut, Wharton School of Business, and Dale Carnegie.
Commenting on his new role, Mr. Onorato notes, “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to be a part of Inserra’s history and strong trajectory. I look forward to bringing my brand of operational leadership to Inserra. I strongly believe that for a leader to be successful, he/she must have the ability to adapt to rapid change and nurture an inclusive culture that empowers employees to rise to the challenge.”
Rick Cannellos, Senior Client Partner who led the project for Epsen Fuller Group comments, “We were searching for a strong operational leader. A true veteran of the industry who boot-strapped his way from night-clerk to a top-of-the-house supermarket executive, Ron has honed his craft with many years in large format grocery operations in the northeast. Furthermore, he has a true “down to earth” collaborative leadership style which is a perfect fit for the Inserra organization.”
“Rick did a tremendous job for us. With his invaluable counsel and guidance, we performed an extensive search in which we were able to meet and assess some of the top leadership talent in our industry,” said Mr. Inserra. “We turned over every stone to make sure we made the best possible decision and I am confident that Ron Onorato is the right choice for us. Beyond his amazing track record in large supermarket operations, Ron’s passion, ambition, energy, integrity, and friendly, authentic demeanor are a delight to behold. While he has big shoes to fill, I could not think of a better suited person to carry us into this next stage of growth.”
